Putting On The Sky
Ivan Forde’s solo exhibition curated by Dexter Wimberly in Tokyo, Japan.

Opening Reception, November 17
On view November 18 - December 20, 2023

KOKI Arts presents Putting On The Sky, Guyana-born / Harlem-based artist Ivan Forde’s debut solo exhibition in Tokyo, Japan. Recognized for innovations in the cyanotype process on epic scales, Forde’s practice is primarily concerned with poetic symbols, and how they change, or stay the same, in different contexts. The works on view include a new suite of “blueprint paintings”, in addition ot an original wall paper and tailored paper suits that coalesce into a multi-sensory environment that brings alternative process photography, printmaking, sound and video performance, and wearable sculptures into conversation.

Smithsonian National African American Museum Of History and Culture

Pleased to share that “Fall Of Man” from the 2012 Transformation series is featured in the exhibition titled: "Afrofuturism: A History of Black Futures on view March 2023 - September 2024 in Washington D.C.

“Its a huge honor not only to have my earliest body of work in this historic national museum and exhibition dedicated to Black cultural production, but for it to be seen in a hall of great thinkers including Sun Ra, Betty and Miles Davis, Octavia E. Butler, Outcast, Prince, Wangechi Mutu, and Lorna Simpson is humbling and uplifting” - Ivan Forde

Oasis. (2023) on view in The Uptown Triennial

is a new sound installation now on view in the 3rd Uptown Triennial: a fantastic exhibition at the Wallach Art Gallery (615 west 129th street in Harlem NYC) that showcases artistic practices responding to the sound and music. Join me at the artist’s panel on September 7th, 2023 at 6pm to learn about the process and influences behind my project.

At the center of Oasis (2023) is Scratching Water, an hour long loop of original soundscapes and musical compositions by Forde panning between two painted and 24k gilded shipping drums turned resonator sculptures. Viewers encounter an 8 foot tall illuminated scroll created with the assistance of the Powerhouse Arts printshop, a new blueprint painting on canvas, cyano-typed black-eye peas, and a graphite wall rubbing in the artist’s hand.
